While Deepa and Saurav honored many rituals, they also put their own spin on the day with personal touches like the unique wood-veneer programs made by the bride, which featured a custom-designed four-letter monogram.
This was the first destination wedding for either family, so the couple wanted to be sensitive to the fact that they were going against the grain and to find ways to keep everyone comfortable and happy. One big way to do that was by including all of the children and choosing a very accommodating, kid-friendly venue. “This wedding was so much about family in a way that I haven’t seen a client do in a long time,” says Rago.
As soon as she arrived, Rago made a run for the local marketplace. “It was hard not to be inspired when surrounded by such authentic, colorful stuff,” says Rago, who filled Frida Kahlo–esque welcome bags with Mexican candies and bright fans, and gathered cute trinkets to give as prizes for the rehearsal dinner quiz show and dance contest.
Although these two cultures may seem worlds apart, designer Michelle Rago plucked out their common bonds, starting with color: “They both embrace bright colors that I found worked in very complementary ways.” Other unifying factors she played
up included spicy foods, folkloric music and the importance and closeness of family.
An Indian couple from New Jersey with a passion for Mexico headed south of the border to host a culturally conscious destination wedding just steps from the ocean. After a casual, fiesta-inspired welcome party and a lively rehearsal dinner in an underground cave, a sunset reception followed an Indian ceremony with a modern twist, complete with saris, floral garlands, the groom arriving on horseback and a Lucite mandap (canopy).

Breathtaking views made for many romantic moments. Dinner and dancing took place under the stars—both Mother Nature’s and colorful tin ones hanging from the tent! The cocktail hour was held around a fountain strung with lights and filled with bougainvillea blossoms.
